Ethics and Mortuary archaeology
After doing the reading in the Text and on B-courses, please discuss
in writing the potential advantages and disadvantages of excavating and
studying the material from burials. Be prepared to discuss these issues
in seminar.
Think about the state of preservation of objects in this context, the
reflections of culture and society in burial customs and cemetery
organization, not to mention the scientific analysis of skeletal
material, etc.
At the same time though, ethically and morally what are the
difficulties of working with this material? When and where should we
draw the line as to which burials are "disturbed" and which are
"excavated"?
Who should make these judgments/decisions?
